Microsoft Windows Vista presents two significant issues for remote-control programs such as Remote-Assist.
Aero Desktop If your PC meets certain performance criteria Windows Vista will automatically enable the Aero color scheme. This setting slows down remote connections to the point where they are effectively unusable. The solution to this problem is to temporarily (or permanently) change the 'Windows Aero color scheme' to the 'Windows Vista Basic color scheme'. Remote-Assist will detect if Aero is enabled and offer to change to the Vista Basic color scheme and reboot the PC.
After rebooting the PC will automatically log on to windows and start Remote-Assist. You will be asked if you change back to the Aero color scheme after the next manual restart or leave it permanently set to the Vista Basic color scheme*. User Account Control (UAC) To quote Microsoft: "The main goal of User Account Control is to reduce the exposure and attack surface of the operating system by requiring that all users run in standard user mode. This limitation minimizes the ability for users to make changes that could destabilize their computers or inadvertently expose the network to viruses through undetected malware that has infected their computer." Basically this means if you try and do anything that requires administrative privileges such as installing a program or editing the registry then you will be temporarily disconnected and will be unable to complete the task. The solution this problem is to temporarily (or permanently) disable UAC and reboot the PC. Remote-Assist will detect if UAC is enabled and offer to disable it and reboot the PC.
After rebooting the PC will automatically log on to windows and start Remote-Assist. You will be asked if you want to re-enable UAC after the next manual restart or leave it permanently disabled. Once these changes are made connection to a remote Microsoft Windows VIsta PC should be very similar to connecting to a Microsoft WIndows XP PC. * You can manual change from the Areo color scheme to Vista basic by carrying out the following instructions:
